MAJOR
PROJECTS AND PROGRAMS
BLUE
STAR BANNER PROGRAM
A
traditional program during a time of conflict recognizing
those families who have Service men and women engaged in that
conflict. Families are provided a Blue Star Banner
which is hung in a window in their homes to signify that their
loved one is deployed. This tradition began during World
War I and continues today.
OPERATION CHRISTMAS BEAR
Operation Christmas Bear
is a Christmas party for the families of Service men and
women deployed to a combat zone. Over 750 family members
attended this year's event held at the Cahaba Shrine in
Huntsville, Alabama. Each child received a teddy bear with
a camo-scarf with an inscription reading: "My Dad [Mom] Is
My Hero". With five Santa Clauses present each family
member could have their pictures taken with Santa and copies
provided to them for mailing to their deployed loved ones. Each
child had the opportunity to watch movies, have their faces
painted, watch two great magicians, see a petting zoo, climb a
wall, and write personal messages to their fathers and mothers,
aunts and uncles and friends overseas. Through the generous
support of local and national and international businesses and
the affiliated membership of the North Alabama Veteran's and
Fraternal Organization's Coalition, Operation Christmas Bear was
a huge success based on the thank you notes and comments made by
family members who were in attendance. We are looking forward to
next year's event!!
OPERATION WELCOME HOME
A
program designed to express the appreciation of the communities'
in North Alabama and Southern Tennessee to those members of our
Armed Forces who have returned from the combat zone. No matter
how small the element every Soldier, Sailor, Marine and Airman
is met by a welcoming committee of families, residents of the
local community and other well wishers when they return to
their hometowns or their nearest airports. Crowds numbering
1,700 have consistently shown up at the Huntsville International
Airport to welcome our local heroes. While smaller numbers of
well wishers have attended local unit welcome homes in smaller
communities, crowds numbering 300 to 500 are not uncommon.
